Why I Don’t Believe in Karma — And What I Believe Instead

People sometimes ask me, “Do you believe in karma?” It’s a fair question — especially in a world where phrases like “what goes around comes around” feel natural, comforting, and even logical.

Years back, I came across an image that put the contrast into words so simply:

Karma: You get what you deserve. Christianity: Jesus got what you deserve.

That comparison captures exactly why I don’t believe in karma—and why I believe in grace instead.

Karma Sounds Fair… Until You’re the One Who’s Broken

Karma is built on the idea of cosmic fairness: If you do good, good comes back. If you do bad, bad comes back.

It’s tidy. Predictable. Balanced.

But life isn’t tidy. People suffer who didn’t deserve it. People hurt others out of their own pain. People make mistakes they can’t undo. People carry wounds they didn’t cause.

If karma were true, none of us would stand a chance.

Christianity Offers Something Karma Never Can: Grace

Christianity doesn’t deny justice — but it doesn’t leave us alone with it either.

Scripture teaches something radically different:

“He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.”
— Psalm 103:10 (NKJV)

That’s the opposite of karma.

And then:

“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:21 (NKJV)

Karma says, “You carry the weight of everything you’ve ever done.” Jesus says, “I carried it for you.“

Karma says, “You earn your way.” Jesus says: I made the way.

Karma says, “You get what you deserve.” Jesus says: I got what you deserved — so you can receive what you never could earn.

That’s not harsh. That’s not preachy. That’s mercy.

Grace Doesn’t Ignore Wrong — It Transforms It

Grace doesn’t pretend we’re perfect. It doesn’t erase consequences. It doesn’t excuse harm.

But it does something karma never can:

It restores. It heals. It forgives. It rebuilds. It gives back what was lost. It makes beauty out of ashes.

My own life has been living proof of that. Not because I’ve done everything right — but because God has been faithful even when I wasn’t.

So, Do I Believe in Karma?

No — I don’t.

Not because I’m trying to win an argument. Not because I think karma is “bad.” Not because I want to preach at anyone.

I don’t believe in karma because I’ve lived through things that only grace could heal. I’ve seen restoration that karma could never explain. I’ve received mercy I didn’t earn. I’ve watched God work in ways that had nothing to do with what I “deserved.”

Grace changed my life. Grace saved my family. Grace restored what was broken.

And grace — not karma — is the story I trust my life with.

Grace is for you.

Not because you deserve it. But because God loves you.

And that’s the most freeing truth I know.
