Pure Wonder Under the Aurora

This past weekend, my family and I slipped away to Edmonton for a change of scenery. It felt good to step out of our usual routine and shake off that familiar “cabin fever” that settles in during long Alberta winters. And this winter has been especially brutal — the kind of cold that bites through layers and lingers in your bones. Northern Alberta has seen temperatures I can’t even remember experiencing before.

Being with loved ones is always a gift, but when you live with a chronic illness, even the sweetest moments can come with a cost. Good company, yummy food, and a bit of Thrift Store treasure hunting made the weekend feel warm and full. Yet beneath the laughter and conversation, the pain slowly crept in — dull, aching, heavy. Muscle weakness, spasms, and that familiar exhaustion began to settle over me like a weighted blanket I didn’t ask for.

Still, we made the most of it. We wandered aisles of second-hand shops, shared meals that comforted the soul, and enjoyed the simple joy of being together. It truly was a good weekend.

Then came the 500 km drive home. Thankfully, our truck is comfortable, and those heated seats felt like a small mercy from God Himself, soothing my aching back. The sky began to darken as we headed north, and then — there it was.

The Aurora Borealis.

Stretching across the sky in ribbons of green, dancing as though no one was watching. My breath caught. My heart lifted. For a moment, the pain faded into the background, replaced by pure wonder.

There’s something about the Northern Lights that feels like a whisper from Heaven — a reminder that even in seasons of hardship, beauty still breaks through. God’s perfect canvas, painted across the night sky.

As I watched, I felt like a little kid again. Innocent awe. Quiet joy. A spark of delight that danced inside me just as the lights danced above. In that moment, I wasn’t thinking about pain or fatigue. I was simply present, soaking in the glory of God’s creation.

Pure wonder under the Aurora.
