Life is a journey filled with unexpected twists and turns. For many of us, the path is marked by challenges that seem insurmountable. In my case, it was a diagnosis that came when I was just a child, casting a shadow over my future. But through it all, one truth has remained steadfast: God is faithful. Today, I want to share a piece of my story in the hope that it will encourage you to trust in His plan, no matter what circumstances you face.
A Childhood Diagnosis and a Grim Prognosis
At the tender age of five, I was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. The specialists were not optimistic. They told my family that I would likely be in a wheelchair by the age of ten, unable to have children, and that my life expectancy would be cut short, reaching early adulthood at best. For any family, such news would be devastating. We did our best to cope with the uncertainty, but for me, there was something deeper stirring—a seed of faith that would grow stronger as the years went on.
“For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for peace and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” –Jeremiah 29:11
Although I didn’t fully understand the weight of this promise as a child, it became a lifeline as I grew older and began to seek God for myself.
Defying Expectations and Walking in Faith
Against all odds, I defied those early predictions. Today, at 37 years old, I am still walking independently. Though I use a rolling walker for long distances, I am not confined to a wheelchair. I am happily married to my husband & best friend, Joshua, and together we have been blessed with two awesome sons, Gabriel and Benjamin, despite being told that motherhood would not be possible. Every step I take, both physically and spiritually, is a testament to God’s miraculous power and grace.
In moments of weakness, when the pain of my condition seemed unbearable, I found strength in Yeshua (Jesus). He has been my comforter, healer, and guide, proving time and again that His strength is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). His promises have upheld me, reminding me that no matter what the world says, His word is the final authority.
Facing New Challenges with Unwavering Faith
This year, I faced another daunting challenge when I was diagnosed with heart failure and had to undergo surgery to have a defibrillator implanted. It was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life, yet also one of the most profound in my walk with Yeshua. In those moments of fear and uncertainty, I felt His presence more tangibly than ever before.
“Be still, and know that I am God” –Psalm 46:10
This verse echoed in my heart as I navigated the storm, reminding me to rest in His sovereignty. It wasn’t easy, and there were times when I felt overwhelmed by the ‘what ifs’ and unknowns. Don’t get me wrong, I experience fear just like anyone else. But God’s power and love consistently rise above my fear, giving me the courage to press on, knowing He is in control. Each time I surrendered my anxieties to Him, I experienced His peace, which surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).
Choosing Faith Over Fear
Living with Muscular Dystrophy and heart failure has taught me many things, but perhaps the greatest lesson is this: we have a choice. We can choose to let fear and doubt dictate our lives, or we can choose to stand on the promises of God. I choose faith. I choose to believe that my life is in His hands, that every breath I take is a gift, and that His plans for me are good.
No matter what diagnosis you may be facing, no matter how impossible the situation may seem, remember this: God is greater. He is the God of the impossible, the One who parted the Red Sea, who healed the sick, and who raised the dead. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).
Embracing God’s Truth in Your Life
If you are struggling to find hope in your own situation, I encourage you to immerse yourself in God’s Word. Declare His promises over your life daily. Speak life and truth, even when your circumstances seem to contradict what you are believing for. Remember, God’s Word is alive and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12).
Here are some affirmations you can declare over your life:
- “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” – Psalm 139:14
- “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” – Philippians 4:13
- “By His stripes, I am healed.” – Isaiah 53:5
My journey is far from over, and I know there will be more challenges ahead. But I am confident in this: the God who has brought me this far will not abandon me now. I am living proof that His grace is sufficient, that His power is made perfect in our weakness, and that His love endures forever.
If you are reading this today and you feel overwhelmed by your own trials, I want you to know that you are not alone. God sees you, He loves you, and He has a plan for your life that is greater than anything you can imagine. Trust in Him, lean on His promises, and watch as He turns your trials into triumphs.
